1.3 History of Play-Well TEKnologies

Tim Bowen was introduced to the LEGO® building system in 1996 and recognized it to be both a popular play manipulative and a tremendous learning medium. In 1997 he recognized an opportunity to pay the bills while engaging in interesting and satisfying work with a very cool toy and began offering a summer camp and drop-in program based on projects which combined the elements of fun, challenge, and learning.

After school enrichment classes in Marin County followed in 2000. Our first instructor, Marco Buoncristiani, was hired in 2001. By 2002 we were running programs in five Bay Area counties. Our first promotion of instructor to manager, Alex Shullman, occurred in 2003 with our revenues at about $300K. In 2019 we had 200 to 500 employees (depending on the season) and offered $10M of programs in twenty-six states to over 100,000 children each year.
